The psychology of darts and alcohol

'Drinking before games definitely helps players. If it had not been for alcohol, I would have probably not won anything in the sport.' - Dennis Priestly.

In the world of professional darts, a peculiar and longstanding tradition has persisted – the association between alcohol consumption and enhanced performance.

With the PDC World Darts Championship around the corner, the topic of darts and alcohol has re-entered the public conversation.

Unlike many other sports where alcohol is strictly forbidden (and severely hinders performance), darts players often indulge in a pint or two during matches.

While this practice may seem counterintuitive to the norms of elite sports, there are intriguing psychological and physiological reasons behind why many professional darts players see alcohol as a component of their performance.

Nerve Calming Effect:

Darts is a precision sport that demands high focus and steady nerves. Throwing a small, pointed projectile at a distant target requires impeccable hand-eye coordination and a calm disposition. Here, alcohol, known for its anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties, can play a role in calming the nerves of players. A moderate amount of alcohol can induce a sense of relaxation and reduce anxiety, allowing players to approach their throws with a steadier hand and a clearer mind.

Psychological Boost:

The ritual of having a drink during a match can serve as a psychological crutch for some players. It provides a familiar routine and a momentary escape from the intense pressure of competitive play. This can contribute to a player's mental resilience, helping them face the challenges of a match with a more composed mindset. The association of alcohol with camaraderie and celebration in pub culture further adds a positive psychological element to the practice.

Social Tradition:

Darts has strong historical ties to pub culture, where the sport has been traditionally played. The social atmosphere of pubs (often accompanied by a pint or two) has become ingrained in the culture of darts. For many players, this tradition is more about camaraderie and shared experience than the direct impact of alcohol on their performance. It provides a way for players to unwind, socialise, and connect with the sport's roots.

While moderate alcohol consumption may have perceived benefits for some darts players, it's crucial to acknowledge the potential drawbacks. Excessive drinking can impair motor skills, judgment, and coordination – all of which are critical in a sport like darts. Striking the right balance is key, and players must be mindful of their limits to ensure that the potential benefits of a relaxed demeanour don't give way to performance-detrimental effects.

The relationship between professional darts and alcohol is a unique and somewhat paradoxical aspect of the sport. While the calming and social aspects of moderate alcohol consumption may offer some players a psychological boost, it is essential to approach this tradition with caution.

Striking a balance between tradition, camaraderie, and optimal performance is crucial, ensuring that players can enjoy the social aspects of the sport without compromising their precision and focus on the board.
